How to Win Awards

When applying for awards, it is important to remember this tips:

bullet

Learn all you can about what you are doing, do NOT be afraid to ask for help.  Remember, we all started at the beginning, even the so called "experts".  Nobody woke up one morning knowing all that there is to know.

bullet

Double check that all their links work, images are there, text is spelled correctly.

bullet

All the pages are where they are supposed to be.

bullet

Use a second browser to check that everything looks right.  If you are using IE get a copy of netscape to check.

bullet

Be sure to code for at a minimum 600x800 in 16 colors.

bullet

Use care when selecting fonts, most people will have the basics only or a few extras that may not show up and your pages will look odd if you have images with graphics and your text is the same font.

bullet

Make sure your images are clean and crisp, nothing looks worse than "muddy" images.

bullet

Make sure that menus are easy to navigate.

bullet

Organize the site in logical groups.

bullet

Choose colors carefully for backgrounds and text, be sure that there is good contrast.

bullet

READ CRITERIA CAREFULLY AND FULLY.

bullet

Take the whole process with a grain of salt, if you win great!!  If not, who cares, it's not like they are sending money or anything.  And remember to have fun with your web site.

bullet

Most of all, design your site to suit what you have to say.  Don't design a site to win awards, glory is fleeting.  Working hard to please someone else at your own expense is a waste of precious time and you would do better to find something else to occupy yourself.  UNLESS you are designing a site for a specific person, in that case, for a specific reason, then do it to please that person and to don't worry about anyone else....take this (the web and page building) as it is, a way to communicate what you have to say.... nothing more, nothing less....

It's been my experience that most people will do as they want, and not so much as they need to in order receive an award. In the best interest of anyone wishing to receive an award, follow the requires to the best of your abilities and you'll be surprised at the results you'll get in the long run.
