Knit Mittens

Materials Needed:
1 pair on size 6 knitting needles and 1 pair of size 4 knitting needles.
7 oz. skein of Worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Yarn).
2 stitch holders.
 
This pattern is for children and women's mittens. The pattern is below:
Starting at cuff, with size 6 knitting needles, cast on 32 (36, 40) sts.
Change to size 4 needles and work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 2 1/2"(2 1/2, 3").
Change to size 6 needles and work in Stockinette Stitch (K a row, P a row) for 6 rows.
 
Thumb Gore: Row 1: K 15 (17, 19) sts, place a marker on needle, inc 1 st in next st 2 times, place a marker on needle, k 16 (17, 19)sts for thumb gore.
Row 2: Slipping markers as you work, P across.
Row 3: K to first marker, slip marker, inc 1 st in next st, k to st before marker, inc 1 st in next st, sl marker, k remaining sts.
Repeat last 2 rows until there are 10 (12, 14) sts between markers.
Row 4: P across.
On a K row, k to first marker, remove marker and place these sts on a stitch holder. K next 10 (12, 14) sts, inc 1 st in next st, remove marker, place remining 15 (17, 19) sts on another stitch holder. Turn and P across.
 
Thumb: Next Row: K 10 (12, 14) sts, inc 1 st in next st. Turn. Continue in Knitting in stockinette stitch over the 12 (12, 14) sts until length of thumb is 1 1/4" (1 1/2", 2") or reaches 1/4" from tip of thumb, end with a P row.
To Shape Tip: K 2 tog. Repeat from *across.
Break off, leaving a 12" end. With this end, draw remaining sts tog and secure; then sew thumb seam.
 
Hand: Slip sts from stitch holders onto a size 6 Needle. With wrong side facing, attach yarn to first st.
Row 1: P 15 (17, 19) sts, cast on 2 sts across the 2 cast-on sts at base of thumb, p 15 (17, 19) sts. Continue knitting in stockinette st over the 32 (36, 40) sts.
For All Sizes: There 32 (36, 40) sts on needle. Turn. P *across.
 
To Shape Tip: Row 1: (K 2 tog, K 3 (4, 5) sts, place marker on needle) 7 (6, 6) times; K 2 tog, K 3 (4, 5) sts.
Row 2: slipping markers, p from * across.
Next Row: K 2 tog, k 2 sts, slip marker, k 2 tog, k 2 sts, slip marker, k 2 tog, k 2 sts, slip marker, from * across.
Next Row: Removing markers, P across. Last Row: *K 2 tog. Repeat from * across.
Break off, leaving a 14" end. With end, sew mitten seam.
Make another mitten in the same way.
